Well, of course, many of the diretories in this online album are about interesting Japanese customs (like Kevin's School in Japan), but these are things that don't fit in other categories, or that I especially want to highlight.
On the first working day of January, the Mayor calls all the leaders of the community together, including the volunteer firemen, the policemen, congressmen and local ku-chos (the equivalent of neighborhood association presidents) and School Board members, and other distinguished guests (like ME?) as well as all the town employees for a pep talk about safety and progress and ........ Many speeches are made, then we all drink sake in the lobby and go back to work. Nice way to kill a couple of hours.
